The New Innovation of Rentals Scooters at UConn
What Happens When UConn Students Turn Challenges Into Innovation?
A student-founded mobility initiative highlights UConn’s commitment to entrepreneurship, sustainability, and campus innovation
For many UConn students, getting to class, work, housing, and campus resources already requires careful planning. Long distances, tight schedules, and limited transportation options can turn everyday routines into obstacles. For others, these challenges aren’t occasional—they’re constant.
At the University of Connecticut, innovation often starts with lived experience. When students encounter real problems, they are encouraged to think critically, design solutions, and apply what they learn beyond the classroom.
That mindset helped inspire Levy Fleets, a micromobility initiative founded by Guillermo Sandoval, a former UConn student, who experienced these campus transportation challenges firsthand. What began as a student idea evolved into a real-world solution designed to improve mobility, accessibility, and efficiency across campus.
Levy’s scooter program reflects UConn’s broader commitment to entrepreneurship, applied learning, and innovation. By providing a reliable alternative for short-distance travel, the program supports students who may not have access to a car, face time constraints between classes, or simply need a more flexible way to move around campus.

Every campus includes individuals with different mobility needs—students without vehicles, residents balancing work and academics, and community members who rely on alternatives to traditional transportation. Programs like Levy aim to complement existing transit options while promoting responsible use, safety awareness, and respect for pedestrians and campus regulations.
For UConn, student-founded initiatives like Levy demonstrate how higher education can translate into meaningful impact. They show how academic knowledge, entrepreneurial drive, and institutional support can come together to solve real challenges within the university community.
As Levy continues operating at UConn, the program remains focused on safety, sustainability, and collaboration—reinforcing the idea that innovation works best when it serves the people who inspired it.
How to Ride Responsibly at UConn
Safe and respectful riding is essential to maintaining a positive campus environment for everyone. Levy riders are expected to follow all university guidelines and local traffic laws while operating scooters.
Wear a helmet: Helmets significantly reduce the risk of head injuries and are strongly recommended for all riders.
One rider per scooter: Scooters are designed for single riders only. Riding with a passenger increases the risk of accidents and injuries.
Follow all traffic laws: Obey traffic signals, signs, and right-of-way rules. Scooters are subject to the same laws as other vehicles when operating on the road.
Do not ride on sidewalks: Sidewalk riding creates hazards for pedestrians. Riders should use approved roads, bike lanes, or designated areas where permitted.
Respect pedestrians: Always yield to pedestrians and reduce speed in shared spaces.
Ride sober: Operating a scooter while impaired is dangerous and prohibited. Ride responsibly to protect yourself and others.
Park properly: Park scooters in designated areas and avoid blocking walkways, ramps, entrances, or accessibility paths.
